Massada National Park A must ! Israel’s second most popular tourist site. The mountaintop fortress, transformed by King Herod in 35 BCE into a three-tiered winter home, boasts two luxurious palaces, as well as bathhouses, storage rooms and impressive water cisterns. An eternal symbol of Jewish history and heritage, it is the site of heroic defiance by a few Jewish zealots who took their own lives rather than surrender to the enslaving might of the Roman Empire. Massada offers fabulous views of the Dead Sea and of the Judean Desert. Easily accessible via a short cable car ride or by hiking up the steep Serpent's Path. An audiovisual show illustrates the story of Massada. Located only 18 km. north of the Ein-Bokek hotel area. On site: visitors centre, food & beverage outlets and a gift shop.
Recommended Drinking water, sunglasses, comfortable shoes, head cover.
Additional Information Open seven days a week. First cable car at 8:00. Closing times: October to March - 16:00. April to September - 17:00. Tel: 972-8-658 4207/8
Sound and Light Show A most dramatic spectacle that recounts the history of Massada with special pyrotechnical effects. Spectators view it from a natural open-air theatre on the west side of the mountain, reachable via Arad, the blooming desert town 20 km away. |
